Mary Ackers grew up on Tarkiln Road and graduated from Berne Union High School in 1935. Working several jobs, she put herself through nursing school and earned her LPN. After retiring from the Ohio State University Hospital, she continued working as a private duty nurse, living with her patients and caring for them 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Having no family, Mary Ackers chose to leave her estate to future graduates from Berne Union. The purpose of the Mary Margaret Ackers Scholarship Fund is to further the higher education of worthy high school students, who without such aid, would not be able to pursue their education.
